How to Build a Culture That is Not About the Person Leading

By Anthony Taylor - November 28, 2016

As you may know, culture and strategy are tied closely together.

If you want better follow through, execution, and performance, you can look to your culture to see how that either supports or detracts from those behaviours.

In this podcast interview, Seth Godin talks about groups of people that hold the values that you care about. These already exist. You don't invent or create them; you just have to be a leader for them.

These tribes are attracted to the things that you say as a leader to help them get to where they want to go. That's why hiring for fit is so valuable. If the people you bring on board already have similar values and drivers, it takes less work (energy, time and money) to get your team aligned with your vision and strategy.

The tactics and strategic priorities you choose as part of your strategic plan are also important to your success

  • If you do things that are not in line with where you want to go, then you may end up in the wrong place.
  • If you do things that are inline with where you want to go, then you'll end up in the right place

Watch our Webinar: How to select strategic priorities

If your team culture supports these same strategic priorities, you're likely to save time and money and have an easier time implementing your initiatives. However, if you're not selective when hiring, your organization's destination might not be the same place the employees want to go.

What happens when you ask/make someone do something they don't want to do?

They will resist or do nothing. It will cost more money and time than it needs to, and can have negative cultural and morale impacts on other team members.

So, find the right people (through culture fit) to go the same direction  (through vision and alignment) you'll be successful faster.
